In plain words
We must come to know what is distinctive in this learning. However many books one reads,
though they pass M.A.s and B.A.s by the score, though they be elders of great renown, though they have wealth and be given to good works, though they be honoured men famed on earth, though long life and health be theirs without end, though they be men of perfect strength, though they ever practise japa and tapas and be brāhmins who chant the Vedas, they are never the equals of the devotees; unless they become devotees of God, Mukti will not come.
So we must become worthy of that Prema. Prema is everything. We must regard Satya and Prema as our two eyes. With these two we can bring the whole world under our sway. So these two, Satya and Prema, are our śāstra, the essence of the Dharma-śāstras. They are the goal of all religions. The essence of all religions is Satya and Prema. If we drink in their essence, we need learn no other learning. These are not taught by gurus alone. Nor are they known from books. We must develop this in our life, in practice itself.
We must try to love everyone. If we are to win the Prema of God, we must love everyone. This is a very important matter. Hating everyone, mocking them, reviling them, envying everyone's greatness, if I want good to come to me, how will it come? If God's grace is to come, how will it come? If you pour water into the tank and turn the tap, water may come. If you have not filled the tank, will water come however much you turn the tap! So if we fill the tank called the Prema of God, that Prema shows in the tap called all living beings.
Devotees or the strong, the attached, the liberated or the clever, whoever they may be: their own karmas and their own beliefs bring them punishment or protection. "How God has protected me!" you think. The one who protects here is not God. This work is not God's. Your own prayer protects you. Your own good deeds protect you. Your own conduct protects you. If any troubles come to you, any loss, any sorrow, for all of them your own resolves are the cause. Your own actions are the root cause of it. For good and bad, a person's own virtues and faults are the cause. God is only a witness.
Here there is current. In the current there is light. Switch it on, and the light shines.
