In plain words
If they do not adjust even their time, if they cannot rule their time properly, how can they rule the world? Whatever hindrance may come in the way, you must go there and arrive on time. This keeping of time is essential for man. For students, for teachers, for any person at all, for rulers: this keeping of time is most essential. At what time we must come. At what time we must go to college. At what time we must bathe. At what time we must take breakfast. We must do all these well and in the right way. Only when we keep time in this way can the heart too be perfect. There must be no unevenness in even one small thing. Only then does discipline become a habit. But the reason discipline is lost today is that keeping time has failed in us.
Students! Today the system of education is simply going down a kind of wrong path. In this education there is no sign at all of awareness or skill. Learning books by heart, getting marks in what has been learnt by heart, taking degrees: this alone is what goes on. Farming is for food. Learning is for knowledge. But unhappily today we think of education as if it were for food. Our education is for life. Not for food. All of today's students lead their minds far down a wrong path. A student is very clever in mathematics. To nourish that well, the heads must encourage him to some extent and the teachers to some extent. The student too must go on following it. In that way, whatever liking each one has in each subject, honouring that liking one must go on developing that subject. Today, with commerce, with science, with bio science, they make plans at the very start for earning and a job: what job will I get in my future, how much will I earn? So if we look at it in this light, they are studying for a living, not for the highest goal of life. One must earn a good salary. What is all this salary, salary? Even a watchman draws a salary. A bus conductor draws a salary. What is this salary? We must earn the salary called life. We must try to gain the joy of learning, not the joy of the senses.
Education must be something that relates to body, mind and Ātma. Just as the principle of the Ātma moves within and without, so too education must move everywhere. That is constant integrated awarness: we must nourish it.
