In plain words
This is true education. It is not cramming the head with all the matters of the world, loading the head with them, and then falling down with some blood pressure or paralysis. All these only nourish an outward civilisation. But we must develop the inner civilisation too. That is what matters most. If the foundations are not secure, what use is it, however many mansions we build? So we must try to strengthen the nature of the mind within and its purity. Then we may enjoy outward happiness. Though the outward is needed by us, we must nourish the inward that is its support. That is ripeness of heart, breadth of heart, purity of heart. That is our true freedom. Freedom does not mean roaming the bazaars as we please. Freedom is not doing whatever work comes into your head. Freedom is what is made of these three together: self-control, the Ānanda of the Ātma and the Jñāna of the Ātma. But today, giving many kinds of meanings to this freedom, man simply behaves worse than dogs. No, no: our students must be like a street lamp for each country, each home, each bazaar. They must become students who hold up an ideal.
Students! Today new students have come in. They must try to learn to some extent the rules of our institution, the regulations of our institution, and to keep them. Not merely like every other institution, this institution is one that gives in a special way all the paths, worldly, physical, moral, spiritual and scientific. You must set yourselves to behave in a way that befits this atmosphere. You who have entered this new place must attune yourselves to it, guard it, and enter into new and inspiring feelings. You must grow a feeling of brotherhood towards all. We must believe this to be our home. There is the hostel. The hostel is truly our home to live in. This is my home. In my home I must take no wrong path of any kind. I must not spoil the state of my home in the least. Not only until your studies are complete: you must regard your life as this school. The degree may be an end for you, but this training must continue until life ends. So discipline is very necessary. Without that discipline our very life is wasted.
Students! First of all, try to understand the situation here. Before entering you may come here full of enthusiasm. But with the discipline here, the mind may waver to some extent now and then.
