In plain words
Now, as he came to the main gate, a beautiful woman, adorned with every ornament, laughing merrily, stood before him. The king bowed to her. Mother, who are you? 'Why are you going out of this palace?' he asked. With great deference he honoured the woman. King! 'I want your permission,' she said. Who are you, and why do you need my permission? I am the Lakṣmī of your kingdom. Today I am leaving your kingdom. He was glad. 'Since you have no wish to stay, you are going; go well,' he said. She went. He went on a little further. A most handsome man … came out of the palace. King! 'Give me permission,' he asked; 'Who are you?' said the king. I am the embodiment of charity. When there is no wealth, how can you give in charity? So I too am going along with wealth. 'Give me permission,' he asked. 'Gladly; a goodbye to you; go well,' he said. As he went a little further, another great man came and stood there. The king asked him too, 'Who are you?' 'I am the one rich in good conduct,' he said. 'King, when wealth and charity have gone, what work can good conduct do here? So I too am going with them,' he said. 'Very well, you too may go,' he said, and gave him permission. After he had gone a little further, yet another person came. King! I am Fame. 'When wealth, charity and good conduct have gone, what work is there for me? So I too am going; give me permission,' he said. He gave him permission. After he had gone a little further, another person came. 'King, you must give me permission,' he said. 'Who are you?' said the king. 'I am Satya,' he said. Wealth has gone. Charity has gone, good conduct has gone, fame has gone. What is the use of my staying? The king fell full length before the embodiment of Satya and held his feet tight. Whoever goes, I do not care; I have nothing to do with them. I have no need of wealth. I do not need charity. I do not need good conduct. I do not need fame or renown. Satya alone is what I want. You cannot go. So saying, he held on tight. Accepting the king's prayer, Satya came back into the palace. Within … moments wealth, charity, fame and good conduct came back again. Great king! Wealth without Satya is useless. Charity without Satya is show. Good conduct without Satya is nothing but bad conduct. Fame without Satya is merely like a degree … . It is like a degree got by copying. 'Satya, renown: what renown is this? It is infamy,' he said. In all of us, Satya is the very breath of life. So we will go nowhere leaving Satya behind. 'Give us permission to come back in,' they said. Then Satyakāma said, 'Satyaṃ nāsti paro dharmaḥ.' 'Neither Dharma without Satya, nor wealth without Satya, nor good conduct without Satya, nor renown without Satya can stand in this world,' he said.
