In plain words
So whether it is to put our hardships far from us or to bring happiness near, our own conduct is the cause.
Embodiments of Prema! The essence of all religions, the goal of all paths, the principle of all teachings is Prema alone. Prema alone. We must make that principle of Prema grow today. Instead of our searching out a hundred faults in others, if one searches out a single fault in oneself, one is blessed. But … do not do such sacred work. He believes that finding fault with others is itself his chief duty. Know your own fault. Remove it. Keep noble feelings. That is gained only through Prema; it is not reached by any other path. Embodiments of the divine Ātma! In no hard time, in no troubles, in no circumstances should one let go of God. God is one.
Even if great wealth comes to you, even if you ride elephants and horses, even if you are named a madman, even if elders praise you fondly, do not forget God, my friend; God is only one, my friend. Even if wicked people revile you, even if you stay free of fault, even if hardships come by the score, even if the body is caught by disease, do not let go of God, my friend; God is only one, my friend. Even if you practise yoga, even if you read the Bhāgavata and the rest, even if you win the title of a pandit, even if they call you a sinner, do not let go of God, my friend; God is only one, my friend. Even if you stand firm under blame, even if you read your fill of learning, be a full pot, my friend; do not stay an undried pot, my friend. do not let go of God, my friend; God is only one, my friend.
We must never forget divinity such as this. We must recognise the truth that there is one God alone. We must recognise the truth that what is within me, outside me and everywhere is God. Recognising only the nature of your body, you must not think, ‘I am a human being.’
Man has thought of himself as no more than a man; he has not come to know what knowledge makes human birth bear fruit; born into human birth, grown up in human birth, those who have become man-lions have forgotten the first truth; fostering differences of caste and creed, taking on the demonic nature, they welcome wars and hold peace conferences; how can one who lives for himself be a man, my friend?
