Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We believe everything. But the word of God alone we do not believe. That itself is the misfortune. When the holy Veda, the Veda that is God's breath, the Veda the ṛṣis all earned on the path of Satya, teaches, 'Tattvamasi: you are That, my dear,' he brushes it aside: 'How can I be That?' He believes all these things: for what? He believes them for selfish ends. The word of God is selfless. When an astrologer comes, takes his hand and says, 'By this line you will gain great learning,' he takes out one rupee more and places it in the man's hand. When another comes and says, 'You will enjoy great fame; there is a line on your hand for it,' he hands over one more rupee. If someone says, 'You will have everything in plenty,' he feels more joy than he can contain. But while he is enjoying this joy and …, if someone looks at another line and says, 'Sir, your span of life is short,' he sinks down. It is all over. By the time life draws near its end he sinks down. Can this life ever escape sinking? Day by day it keeps sinking. One day means a sunrise and a sunset: twenty-four hours have been taken off our life. If you tell him a word of Satya, he is displeased. When you tell him untrue words, words that are transient and impermanent, he swells with joy. That is why: Satya is against the people; untruth pleases the people. All Satya looks hostile to the people. Untruth pleases the people. 'Liquor is sold where it stands; milk goes round from house to house': so, they say, it was said. As for liquor, though … the village and the shop is set up somewhere far from the village, a man walks there, pays his money very happily and fetches it himself. But when someone comes from house to house asking, 'Mother, do you want milk? Do you want curd?', they say, 'We don't want it, go away, go away!' The holy milk that comes to the house they refuse, but we run and run after drink, the impure and wicked thing that unsettles the mind. Today the power of Kali is making man dance this kind of dance. Try from this very day to recognise this. What is true, what is untrue? What is eternal, what is transient? What is the kṣetra, what is the kṣetrajña? The body is merely the kṣetra. But if the Ātma, the kṣetrajña, is not in it, the body is merely an inert thing.

Students! Above all you must grow faith in the principle of the Ātma, the support of everything …. With faith in the Ātma you can achieve everything. One whose Ātma is weak can achieve nothing. Today the studies we study have no connection at all with the experiences we live through in life. But we cannot avoid study. Many children are studying for the M.B.A. In this MBA they have put in what is called management. But though one may get an 'O' grade in this management, before any worker with twenty years of experience this fellow's MBA is of no use at all. He is a small worker. He may have studied up to 1st standard or 2nd standard, poor man.
