Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

I forgot You, Swami; Your feet are what I forgot; I forgot You, Swami. In childhood, partly unknowing; once grown, the cares of the world. All this time goes to waste, Lord; to reach Your feet is the longing of my heart.

My whole longing is to reach Your feet. In childhood, and once grown, falling into infatuation, one may forget God for a while. In Emperor Bali such sāttvic feelings, sacred feelings and endless good qualities were seen in him. When anyone here sets out to give in charity and do Dharma, we must not stand in the way under any circumstances. And so it was that Śukrācārya came to obstruct Emperor Bali, who had set out to give the gift. For the very reason that he stood in the way of this gift, he lost an eye. Man must grow greatly in such sacrifice: in charity and in Dharma.

Without charity and Dharma the body does not endure. This body has come down to us only so that we may make sacrifice. All the powers within us, the divine powers of Manas, Buddhi and Ahaṅkāra, all of them we must offer to God. That very sacrifice takes shape for us as yoga. It is the man who does not sacrifice who today is sinking in the diseases called hardship, sorrow and grief. Faith in God is essential for every human being. Only when that faith is there does mānava change into Mādhava. Whatever God does, it is all for the welfare of the world. Men are unable to recognise that truth. They think He is doing something for His own sake. No one need give Him anything. You have not recognised the reason for which He asked of you.

But as he was about to go, the love and the attachment of the people held him back greatly. Even the people of Kerala may not have noticed some of this. When this Emperor Bali was giving his whole kingdom to Vāmana, the soldiers there, that is, his guards, tried to kill Vāmana. "Should such thoughts come to my guards?" said Emperor Bali, and rebuked them. Satya is the chief form of man. Truth is God. Prema is the form of God. These arts of Prema merge into all the arts. That is why: Love is God. They said, "Live in Love." This charity and Dharma are the sign of man's sacrifice. Nothing falls away merely because you sacrifice. However much you sacrifice, so many thousand times over will growth come to you. But you must not sacrifice in the thought that you want this growth.
