Passage 8

In plain words

What we call ‘I’ is Love; what we call light is Light. The principle of these two, Love and Light, is the chief principle. This light is Jñāna. Prema is upāsana.

Bhakti is far higher than Jñāna. We can experience Bhakti easily. God is one who loves what is simple. He yields to Bhakti alone. That is Prema. Prema: it must spring from within. It must not be stuffed in from outside. We must develop Prema that is tied to no cause. When asked where God is, many say, ‘He is in my heart.’ That is quite wrong. If God is in you, you become the big one and God becomes the small one. If this object is in my hand, this hand is bigger. This object is smaller. If God is in you, you are the bigger. You are one who has contained God. That is not the right answer. You, I, they, all of us are in God; all are in God, but God is not in you. We must understand this secret; so the principle of God is aṇoraṇīyān mahatomahīyān: He is the atom within the atom. He is the vast within the vast. That is why the Veda said of God, ‘Dūrāt dūre antikeca.’ However far your mind is from God, that far will God be from you. The day you make your Prema utterly pure, God becomes very close to you. God is closer than a mother. Even our mother may go far away, but God does not go far away. You must not think that God is watching you all the time. You must develop the good feeling, ‘I am in God.’ Only when we develop such oneness and grow the principle of Prema will divinity become clear to us. To contemplate the Paramātma all day long and to offer that whole day up in the feeling of the Paramātma: that is the aim of holy days.

Embodiments of Prema! All of you must develop Prema. Without Prema we become lower than the beasts. Even a beast has Prema, but in man no expansive Prema is seen, only selfish love. Today we must give up what we call selfishness, grow in care for others, live in truth and make life worthwhile. However long it lasts, it is not good for our life to enter into needless matters of one kind or another. Carry out your duties. You will surely reach God. So God's coming as Avatāra is not merely to remove hardships, sorrows and griefs. Your own prayers will remove all those. God comes only to develop Prema. To share out Prema. So God, who is full of Prema, has come to give Prema. Keeping this truth safe in our hearts, living in Prema, we must grow close bonds with everyone and set about treating all with affection.
