In plain words
It is razing morality and honesty to the ground. How so? Today, if we take a few kinds of examples from our experience, they make it abundantly clear that science is the root cause of this corruption. Videos and radios: these must, strictly and without fail, be in every home. A home without a video seems simply uncivilised. If we consider what the state of an officer living in the middle class is like, his life is sinking into great unrest because of these conditions. The salary he gets is a thousand, or fifteen hundred. But with this money, can he buy videos, can he buy radios, can he buy televisions? He can buy nothing. If he does not, the wife and children in that home suffer in many ways. To make the wife and children happy, he has to buy these videos and radios. There is no money in hand to buy these. For this very reason they begin to take bribes. What is the root cause of these bribes? This technology and science itself is the root cause. So in this way, from the lowest to the highest, people start on these bribes to satisfy those at home, to delight their children, and to gather these many kinds of goods, vehicles and the like. Then again, to have their children taught seems harder still. To put a boy who will study in the first class into a primary school, you have to pay a donation of five thousand or ten thousand. You have to spend more on his uniform dress than on the studies he learns. So, without a donation and without a uniform, that school will not admit the children. Where will this middle-class officer bring this money from? So he tries to take the crooked path. In this way, in this way, science is causing great unrest within man's daily life.
So, however many troubles there may be in our home, though we are caught by the force of circumstances, though it is very hard to eat and to live, outside, at least, our show goes beyond all limits. Through this show and through this Ahaṅkāra as well, man's life is bound up with great expense. Take today's doctors, say, or lawyers, or anyone at all: all the educated officials must have some vehicle or other if they are to go about outside. However many inconveniences there may be at home, outside, at least, he must go about in a car or on a motor-cycle.
