Passage 10

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Worshipping God in many forms is only for the sake of Ānanda. In the land of Rome too, in former times, people believed in many gods, all of them, just as the people of Bhārata believed. After that the Christian religion began. At the very first there was no such thing as oneness. It began from the many into oneness. First there was Socrates. One Plato came as his chief disciple. This Plato alone went on spreading the chief principle to the world. As this Plato's disciple, Aristotle came forth. This Aristotle's own disciple came as Alexander. So all these simply came down by tradition. But the one who taught the Divinity that is in the many was Plato.

So in all countries Satya is one and the same. Though countries differ, Satya cannot change. That is why "Truth is God". We must follow that Satya. This Satya dwells right within us. In the language of Vedānta that same thing was called Sat Cit Ānanda. In every object in the world these three are present: asti, bhāti, priyam. However much objects change, the Sat-entity is one alone. That alone is. Sat means being. And what lends it a kind of radiance is Cit. This is a tumbler. This tumbler exists. But in what way does it exist? It is seen, and so we say that it exists. To make it seen is itself Cit; to experience it with joy is itself Ānanda. Today it may be a tumbler; we can break it up and make it into a plate. The tumbler changed, but the silver did not change. After some more time we can change that plate into a spoon. The form of the plate changed, but the silver did not change. The shape that was in the tumbler, in the plate and in the spoon has changed, but the nature of the substance stays one and the same. In the same way, in humanity the different forms and names may change, but Sat Cit Ānanda does not change. That alone is eternal.

Embodiments of Prema! We must knock down the wall of difference that stands within mankind. We must remove these thick walls of caste and creed. We must believe in the oneness that says all are one. We must grow the principle of Prema. Only then will the whole country too shine with life, as one and in joy. See: for many years in Bethlehem they used to celebrate Jesus' Xmas day with great splendour. It is a principal town. It is the place where Jesus was born. In this place today, because of the evil qualities, evil thoughts, selfishness and self-interest in man, today in that Bethlehem they have stopped Xmas from being celebrated.
