Passage 20

In plain words

When we go to someone's house and they give us a little coffee, we say “thanks”. If we say so much “thanks” for this, how much has God blessed us! However many pump sets you install and run, will they give as much as a downpour? Once a downpour falls, streams and canals fill and run in flood. Who sends down this downpour? However many candle-power bulbs you put up, will they match the light of the sun? However many fans you set up, will the soft southern breeze blow? Who gives the world so much air? Who has given the world so much light? Who has given the world so much water? Should we not give thanks to God, who has given all this? One without this gratitude can be called lower than a beast. When God nourishes, protects and guards us in so many ways, we must give Him some thanks at least. That is your duty. That is why they said, “Duty is God, Work is Worship.” To do your duty is gratitude.

We must carry out our duty. When money grows too great, arrogance goes to the head. In fact, today those who seek money are the most numerous. What is our wealth? The wealth of Jñāna is wealth. The wealth of Prema is true wealth. The wealth of Ānanda is true wealth. What can all this money do? It can have great mansions built. It can set up factories. It can buy cars. But can it buy God? You can buy medicine for a disease. Does the disease go? Anil Kumar said that, whatever kinds of medicine one takes, without the grace of God that life cannot last. Money truly gives us many comforts. It gives air conditioning. But does it give Śānti to the mind? So Śānti of mind is man's chief goal. That Śānti is not found anywhere. It is found only in the Prema of God. The feeling that lies in that Prema, and the strength and power that lie in that Prema, cannot be told as this much or that much. Through that Prema, remember God.
