Passage 19

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Start the day with love Fill the day with love Spend the day with love End the day with love This is the way to God.

But it is through Prema alone that we must attain God. We must resolve to regard this Prema as divinity, not as selfishness or self-interest. So think of the Paramātma with Prema. Today is Mahāśivarātri. Night means what is full of darkness. That is, in this which is full of darkness, we must call to mind a name that is divine, that is light. That is the name of God.

God is the One whose form is the Ātma

We must also understand what God really is. A day is made up of night and daytime. God is what is not a day. That is, God is the One who is neither night nor day. Night and day exist only for those on the earth. When the sun comes above the equator, it is day. When it goes down below the equator, it is night. Night and day are only in your sight; for God there is no night or day. God, they say, is the One whose form is the whole. God is the One who is the Ātma dwelling in all. So whoever we see, we must greet them with respect and courtesy and give them honour. This is why I keep saying it. You can't always oblige but you speak always obligingly. We are leading Bhakti down the wrong road. We think that praying for five minutes on rising in the morning is Bhakti, that keeping a photo is Bhakti, that doing pūjās is Bhakti, that going on pilgrimages is Bhakti. Bhakti is gratitude.

O God! You have blessed me with such a matchless humanness. Not only in the making of the body but in the power of the intellect too. You have sent me on from many kinds of animals to the higher path; for that I must show You gratitude. For the gift of this birth alone, thanks must be given. If a handkerchief falls and someone picks it up and gives it to us, we say “thanks”.
