In plain words
In olden times, in the gurukula, how were they shaped? I started educational institutions here with just this aim: that the gurukula way should come back. In those days they lived on alms they begged. Here there is nothing of that. There are all the comforts you want, all the facilities you want. The children are good. But what I feel is that at home the parents are spoiling them. The warden or the teachers: keep telling the parents, from time to time, everything about each boy, his behaviour, his marks, his conduct. If there is anything wrong with them, we must write to the parents too. “Have you no sense? You are killing your children. This is not right.” We must teach them too: “You must set them on the right path.” Prema, Prema: the Prema you must have is not Dhṛtarāṣṭra's Prema. It must be Daśaratha's Prema. Parted from his son, he gave up his very life, poor man. You must be such ideal children. That alone is what I want.
In every matter there must be right conduct, speech and behaviour. Do not be one thing in front and another behind. Whether you are here or at home, you must keep one and the same conduct. If you are one way there and another way here, this becomes like a drama dance. When you have to act one part on the stage, you have to put on one costume. The moment you go behind the stage, you have to act another part. So do not be an actor. Life itself is acting. But we must keep to the human act alone. We must behave as human beings. Do not learn any disguises. Living in this way, earn true renown and earn renown for the Institute too.
Students! This is what you must learn above all. Even for the sin of killing a brāhmaṇa there is atonement. Even for the sin of killing a cow there is atonement. Even for the sin of killing a woman there is atonement. For deeds against the Vedas too there is atonement. But if a man has no gratitude and becomes ungrateful, there is no atonement for this. It does not matter if there is no gratitude. But one must not be ungrateful. That alone must not be. If you are ungrateful, this sin will not leave you until you die. This is a great sin. We must grow true gratitude. All this time, without Swami taking a single naya paisa, free education. Is it found anywhere in the world? No library fee, no laboratory fee, no medical fee, no tuition fee. Why are we educating you? So that at least a few good children will come up and the country will come right. Today, if you go out anywhere, you must pay five thousand rupees to join LKG. You behave well precisely where they take money to teach you. Even when I teach you so freely, looking on you as My own children, you go without gratitude.
