In plain words
He set up a competition, saying he would give a prize to those who refrained from talking much. Within this he did a great deal of research. He studied the children who talked a lot. He studied the children who did not talk, who talked little. At length, as he brought them up year after year, among the children who talked little the power of intellect grew great. Their speech became pure and holy. Breadth of heart came to them. The power of inquiry grew great. That is discrimination power. He studied the children who talked a lot. Their memory had wasted away. They sank into narrow minds. The power to discern the lasting from the passing, that is, discrimination power, there was none. The ṛṣis all kept silence. They recognised what holy power there is in silence. So every path the ancient ṛṣis lived out leads to a high place.
Wherever students go, they must keep to a discipline. This is the true discipline. That is the true Prema. Not this: to profess Prema when face to face, to act as though one conducts oneself well all through, and then, the moment one's back is turned, to behave in the very opposite way. Such a thing is not right. Grow evenness of mind. Wherever you go, stay in the one state. See that these changes do not come.
Study well. Reach a fine, high standing in your studies. Strive to put what you have studied to good use. See the difference between a jñānī and a learned man. When we put into practice what we have studied, we gain the Ānanda that comes of living it. This is the difference between one who has studied and one who has put it into practice. One who has put it into practice is a jñānī. One who has merely learnt to read books is a learned man.
Students! There are so many Institutes in the world. There are Universities. But you must try to recognise the reason you passed them all by and came here. Here, along with study, there is saṃskāra too. On one side, study; on the other, saṃskāra. When these two are made one, it is put to good use. I have told you what saṃskāra means. To put away the bad habits, bad qualities and bad thoughts in us. To develop good habits, good thoughts and good qualities.
