Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We made a rule that no one should talk anywhere. When some Subject matter comes up, they may consult one another. But we said they must not talk too much. That they must not keep transistors or tape recorders in the room or in any such place. We also said that needlessly one person can become a hindrance to another's studies. In such a situation, do those who are research scholars not have even that much general knowledge? Some set up televisions right inside the room and show them. We put in a VCR for making films; it is in their charge. They can put any film at all on it. What they say is Sai Baba's, but what they show is something else. All these institutions are taking a beating only because such rākṣasas are here. I have grown very tired of telling them again and again. I have had to speak today with the idea that, if I say it before a crowd, their hearts may melt a little. From now on, whatever of this kind goes on in the rooms, I will tell it openly, in this very gathering. Only then is it the right Punishment for them.

They are sunk in the Ajñāna that “Swami knows nothing, Swami is told nothing, Swami sees nothing.” Or else a special kind of Ajñāna is covering them within. They think, “Someone must have written, someone must have told.” This too is a great Ajñāna. If it is about the people here, someone told. One may think someone wrote. People come from country after country. Who tells all their affairs? Do they not have even that much sense? Mere petty minds. But only some are like this. The many others are all very good children. Sad to say, through these bad ones harm keeps happening to the good. When we are asleep, a single mosquito comes and bites us. Thinking, “Where are all these mosquitoes?”, we spray Flit everywhere. The mosquito that bit was one; the ones that died are many, poor things. In the same way, the one who does the harm is one, but many innocent people suffer. The elder children are getting frightened. “Who knows, this is true. Who knows, this is Satya”: in this sort of thing they get all confused. The old ones alone are the cause of these bad habits and these misdeeds. So only if they come to their senses at least from today and show themselves a right example will they be able to stay there. Otherwise we cannot keep them here even for a moment. The new children are innocent.
