Passage 2

In plain words

Saṃskāra is not some kind of industry. It is nothing but separating out the evil thoughts in man and developing good feelings and good conduct. Unfortunately, because today the government has no authority to reform the people, and the people have no strength or ability to reform the government, we have come to suffer so many miseries. What is the reason for this? It is just our failure, in childhood itself, to shape our life rightly to suit our future. In our tender years we must, today, set going the safeguards our future life needs. Students, who are to become the citizens of tomorrow, have to cultivate due humility and obedience today. Today's students do not understand what humanness is. However much we labour and struggle trying to earn degrees, you have to labour many times more than that, nurturing morals and principles. Without morality and honesty, humanness does not shine. For this, the moral and the spiritual are essential.

Students! However much your parents suffer when you fall behind in your studies or in science, a thousand times more than that Mother Sāī suffers on seeing children who fall behind in moral and spiritual things. You must regard the moral and the spiritual as the very eyes of human life. Today worldly learning and physical learning are growing beyond all bounds. They too are necessary. But today we do not inquire into the chief qualities that must be present within human life. Though mankind has advanced so far physically and in worldly ways, it cannot make the effort it takes to develop morally, or in morality and honesty. What is the reason for this? The cause of it is nothing but the selfishness and self-interest that have taken root in man over generations. Whatever one reads, whatever one says, whatever one hears, whatever one does, whatever one sees, behind all of it selfishness and self-interest keep stirring. Without selfishness, man will not try to walk even one step forward. Only selfishness, selfishness. If we live for selfish ends alone, what is to become of society? Without society, where are you? You are one individual in society. You have a duty to share the strength of this individuality with society.
