In plain words
Seeing the sight that meets your eyes, do not, in your delight, take it for Satya; to come to know the Satya hidden behind the screen, come along with me without resting.
Students!
In this world, what man intends is one thing and what comes to pass is another. There will always be gales that bring down to the ground the sparrows' nests of dreams that man builds for himself on the sands of his life. Winds that bring down to the ground the tender buds that have opened their petals never fail to come. Human life is a kind of garland. At one end of this garland is birth, at the other end death. Between the two it is strung together with flowers of this kind: many dreams, troubles, turmoils and unrest. But no man recognises the thread that holds all of these together. Without a thread there is no garland. Only the one who recognises this thread takes shape as a human being. This very thread they called the sūtra. This same thread they called the Brahma Sūtra. So the chief thread, present equally in all human beings and giving them a certain strength and ability, is the principle of the Ātma, which is divinity itself. In Bhārata, the home of the treasure of spiritual wealth, devilish tendencies such as unrest, untruth, selfishness, self-interest and Adharma have broken loose and are dancing the dance of universal destruction. At such a time, trusting that only students are able to establish peace and security in society, we founded institutions of learning.
Students! You must not forget the Satya that all those you regard as citizens, as elders, as respected people, as officials, were once students themselves. Today's students will themselves take shape in the future as the elders, citizens, officials and respected people. So, with the future in view, keep before you the way you now describe and condemn the state of the elders in today's present, and make the effort it takes to shape your own lives in the future too. A student's life is very precious. It is like the foundations of the mansion called the citizenship of the nation. This student stage is what gives the chance to inquire into the right conditions within this mansion called life. The fitting principle that refines man is the subject we must inquire into today. Having inquired well into the conditions of life and gained the Viveka and knowledge fitting for it, the one that must then offer an ideal life is the student's life itself; if society is to be set right (society is not soil, not land: it is nothing but the gathering of human beings), the student's course is this state: sowing the seeds of Prema among humankind, making the blossoms of forbearance open, and offering society the flowers of peace.
