Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If that divine power were not in oneself, how could we read these books? That divine power itself has been making us read these books. We must nurture that divine power today. Selfish people use it for themselves, for their families, for their own ends, and do harm. You must live it out for the welfare of the world. Sarvaloka hite rataḥ. We must put this power to use seeking only the good of the world. Sarvajñānopa sampannaḥ: experiencing all knowledge of this kind, we must make the whole world hear it, and in that way put it to use. We must develop this power for the sake of nurturing good qualities. Without good qualities, all these studies are worthless. Good qualities alone are the main thing in this education. To nurture these qualities, saṃskāras are essential. For this very saṃskāra we must enter the spiritual. We must raise moral values. If moral value itself is missing, we become people who have lived the life of a beast. What use is it to have any amount of wealth? However much wealth, however much strength one has, what use is it? The world may hold it worthy of respect, but no one will be able to love you. We must nurture good qualities in such a way that everyone loves us. Prema is far more important than respect. Respect is a courtesy of the world. Prema belongs to the heart.

Students! Live your life not chasing after name and fame, but only to receive the Prema of the people. All these honours are artificial. When a man comes before them, they may say ‘Namaskāram’; once he has gone behind, they may revile him. This is not what we must earn. Prema comes to us only through good conduct. We must develop good behaviour. What is not in our conduct we cannot get from books. Humility and obedience are essential to education. If you swell with pride, thinking ‘I have had a great education,’ your pride will bring your downfall. The disease in man that yields to no medicine is Ahaṅkāra. If this disease called Ahaṅkāra enters us, we cannot progress at all.

Students! Even though we know everything, we must act like one who knows nothing. I have said this many times. This is precisely the difference between the nature of God and the nature of man. Though He knows everything, God stays as one who knows nothing. Though he knows nothing, man swaggers as one who knows everything. Having everything, God appears as one who has nothing. Though he has nothing, this man acts as one who has everything. Only because man has grown used to this show does humanness keep sinking day by day.
