Passage 11

In plain words

Without Bhakti toward God, all these are worthless. The boy is beautiful in every way. Look at the eyes: they are like stars. Look at the nose: it looks like a gem. Look at the arms and legs: they are well formed. All the limbs are in proper proportion. Only one thing is missing: life. Today's education of ours is just like that. Everything is there. We have passed M.A.s. We have passed M.B.A.s. We have passed Ph.D.s. We have passed everything. Without good qualities, what is the use? We must nurture good qualities. Without those qualities there is no use at all. Why the science of music for a deaf man? However much music you teach a deaf man, what use is it? In the same way, our śāstras, our Upaniṣads: without good qualities, however much one reads, even if one wins the name of a great paṇḍit, there is no use.

Students. Pursue as many studies as you like. But keep faith in God. Without that faith one is not even human. Truth itself is God. Love itself is God. So follow this truth on the right path. However well you pass in your studies, however great a name and fame you earn, you must not lose the moral values of the heart. So, through remembering the Name of God, we must take part as far as we can in service for the good of others. We must not waste the whole mind in some one subject of study. Today, as education keeps on growing, we are losing the natural powers and abilities that were in us. In the old days, when the children sat in the street schools and chanted ‘two ones are two, two twos are four’ like this, even those passing by in the bazaar learned. Now, whether women or men, they go to a shop, buy a sari, a vest, a dhoti, a shirt, and when it comes to how much it costs, they sit pressing a Calculater. Where has their intelligence gone? They are ruining the intelligence God gave. They use all the artificial machines developed in this Science. Press three where you should have pressed four, and the whole total goes wrong. So first of all, nurture your own strength. Remember well the power that is in your own head. Do not depend on your calculater, on your computer. It runs as we adjust it, but it has no life. You are giving it life, but you are taking your own life. This is the great power that has come into today's education. We must rely on our own strength. We must rely on our own legs. We must not rely on this calculater, this computer. When some need arises, we may use it. But first of all, one must stand on one's own. That is self confidence. For one who lacks this Self confidence, where will computer confidence come from?
