In plain words
If anyone disturbs his concentration, “God Himself is disturbing me”: such is his feeling, which takes even that as God's grace.
We must understand the teaching of Vedānta well and act on it. Today our promises, our vows and our teachings of Vedānta: we act as though we had understood them, but as time and occasion come, they vanish. A man vows, “I must walk by this kind of discipline.” He resolves that he will never change again. But when the time comes, he changes completely. One day, it seems, all the deer gathered in the forest and held a conference. What was the agenda of the meeting? “Do dogs have anything like the strength we have? If we kick once with our foot, all their guts will spill out of their bellies in a heap. That much strength is in our little leg. Do dogs have anything like such strength? Dogs cannot run at the speed we run. In speed are we any less than dogs? When we need to, we leap. Dogs cannot leap. If we take the dogs' qualifications and our qualifications, we are far the greater. Why should the likes of us be afraid of dogs? So from today we must not fear dogs at all. We must face them with courage and fight,” they resolved. After taking this decision, all the deer stood up and gave a great many claps: “True! True!” Somewhere a dog heard their noise and at once barked loudly. The moment they heard the dog, not a single deer was left in that assembly. They had run away. What was it they had decided at the meeting? When it came to the test, they could do nothing at all, poor things.
Today's Vedānta and today's conduct are just like this. We must make a fitting effort to bring what we have heard, the feeling we have heard, into our own experience. Today, in many regions and many places, teachings of Vedānta go on all the time. And there is no need even to speak of the spreading of the Gītā. Every single person is spreading the Gītā. Are they spreading it with a right understanding of the Gītā? “What is the secret of the Gītā?”: not one person is to be seen who has recognised it. What is the chief place in the Gītā's teaching, the one as dear as life itself? Not a single pandit tries to recognise it.
A great pandit who spread the Gītā won a great name in the world. Rather than winning the praise of this one and that, to win the praise of the Mahārāja is a great thing. There will be a great reward. My home is in a poor state.
