In plain words
For good and for bad alike, our feelings are the root cause. What is the cause of the clouds being carried from here to somewhere, and clouds from wherever they are being brought here? The wind is the cause. Of sending away the bad feelings in you, and of bringing in good feelings from wherever they are, your own feelings are the root cause. That is why this is what the Veda taught: to make the wished-for bear fruit, and to put the unwished-for far away. Those who followed such a holy path, in keeping with the scriptures, are the great ones. ‘This may hold only for Bhārata. How would it be in other countries! They have no such scriptures, no such study,’ so you may doubt. A country is like a body. Many diseases may come to this body. But one cannot say that the disease that came to one body will come to another. They too go on following it according to the principles of their countries. The principles belonging to this country are this country's. The principles belonging to that country, the people of that country follow. If they do not follow these principles, they too fall into these troubles. There can never be one principle for both.
Four patients came to a doctor saying they had a stomach ache. The stomach ache is the same for all four, but the doctor gives the four of them four kinds of treatment. He examines one. ‘Son! There is no cause at all for your stomach ache. There is only gas; mix the two, soda bicarb and magsulph, and drink it down, and your stomach ache will go,’ he said. To another who came with a stomach ache he says, ‘Son, there is no hurry. Foment it with hot water and that will do,’ he says. Another man with a stomach ache came along. ‘Nothing is wrong with you; take a little salt,’ he says. ‘If you pass two motions it will go,’ he says. To another man with a stomach ache he says he must be operated on immediately. He has appendicitis. The operation must be done. The stomach ache is one and the same for all four, isn’t it; why are the treatments different? In the same way, in many countries these pains may be of many kinds. Troubles may arise. Each country has the treatment suited to it. Though outwardly the disease looks the same to us, within, the nature of the disease is different. The medicines too are different. For this disease that belongs to our Bhārata, this is the medicine. Just by acquiring learning we do not become heroes. We do not become great ones. We do not become officers. In truth, the effort for learning and science is for food. With learning alone you cannot get your food.
