In plain words
Through the power of the Kali age, everyone today is suffering only for the sake of the stomach.
Students! Just filling our stomach does not satisfy us. There are so many people who are our brothers. We must strive to fill their stomachs too. As an individual, enter society. From this society, enter the nation. You must not stay only an individual. For man, who lives as a beast, to change into the divine, changes in the mind are most necessary. Only when the mind changes can man change. There is no gain in man merely changing. We must change the mind. That is the main greatness we must achieve through learning. It is not just going on collecting degrees for nothing. All these degrees must be brought in as a divine feeling belonging to the mind. That is the degree to be gained. It is this: śṛṇvantu viśve amṛtasya putrāḥ. We must win the title ‘Dear one, you are a son of immortality.’ That is the degree we must achieve. What are all these degrees to us? But these degrees too must be had. Along with this, we must join that to it as well. We must not fall prey to greed. Wealth must be earned. It must be used with Dharma. Charity must be given. Fulfilment must come. But we must set a kind of limit. There must be a limit.
Students! I have told you many times. This wealth is like the shoe on the foot. You may say, ‘Sai Baba calls the wealth we worship the sandals on our feet!’ It really is just that. It is simply boots. Only when they fit our feet in the correct size can we walk well. If they are tight, we cannot walk. If they are loose, we cannot walk either. Even when wealth comes to us, we cannot reach the right state. If wealth is too little, we cannot have happiness and peace. We need as much wealth as is necessary. We must not desire too much. See that this thought is pressed into your heart. Earn, and put what you earn to good use.
Learning gives humility; from humility comes worthiness; from worthiness, wealth; from wealth, Dharma; and through that a man gains this world and the next.
If you want purity, you must do charity. Through charity alone comes purity. Through purity alone comes unity. Without unity, it turns into enmity. Through this unity alone comes Divinity. So we must come from charity to Divinity. It is through sacrifice alone that immortality has come to us. Here we must see to the service of society all the more. We must lead a right life with our fellow men.
