Passage 8

In plain words

It is the mind that gives us Śānti. The mind alone is the cause of man's bondage and liberation. We must turn this mind into a mind filled with Prema. There is nothing higher than that.

Students! Every day, night and day keep changing. Evening and twilight, both of them, keep changing. The seasons, spring and the rest, keep changing too. Though everything keeps changing, man's desires alone keep growing day by day. As age grows, delusions grow all the greater. This is nothing but a misfortune. We do not make the effort needed to keep the restlessness of the mind in check and lead a peaceful life. As our age grows, the span of life shrinks, but the desires only grow. It is most necessary to keep the desires in check before the span of life runs out. Who knows when? So first of all, if we keep the mind in check, we can increase our Ānanda.

Students too must curb their words, their looks, their hearing and their thoughts as far as possible; this is most necessary. Students are greatly weakening the power of their minds. It is because mental power is dwindling that memory and all these too are dwindling to a great extent. Above all, we must keep three senses in check: sight, speech and thought. If we keep these three in check, all the rest merge into them. The root cause of memory waning day by day in children is too much talk. The more we cut down our words, the more divine mental power grows. If we develop mental power, we can achieve anything. We can gain anything. In man today mental power is wasting away entirely. He is becoming very weak. To look at, the body may be strong. It is only inert matter. This inert matter has no awareness at all. All this awareness comes to it from the Ātma alone. It is only by Its presence that this body too keeps moving. We buy cars, spending so many lakhs. Without the power of petrol, a car will not move at all. In the same way, if this body lacks the nearness of the Ātma, the body cannot work at all. The body is inert matter. All the senses in it move only by the power of the Ātma.

If one has surrendered to the Ātma, all powers come to us. Because all the senses are under the control of God. If we bring God under our control, why should we worry about these senses? Tyāgarāja too said the same. “O Rāma! If I have the strength of Your grace alone, it is enough; the nine planets will come into my hands,” he said. These nine planets are all under Your control.
