In plain words
A good word they will not hear, though told with all the heart; a bad word reaches the ear at once; can such as these ever come to know Me? Whatever learning they have, what is its fruit?
They will not listen to good words. But bad words they take into their ears in a single moment. From the ear they take them into the heart. From the heart they then come into the hands. They enter into action. That is why there is trikaraṇa śuddhi. We must show oneness in the mind, in speech and in action. If, however long, one thinks, “I am a devotee, I am a devotee,” and wastes one's whole life in mere eating, when will one ever become a devotee? These are words that cheat society. You are cheating yourself. Make the effort it takes to find joy within yourself. Try to experience the final Ānanda that lies in your five sheaths. Keep your inner voice on the right path and follow it. That is conscience. You must follow your conscience. By trying to justify yourself, you become one who has betrayed yourself. You must set about rooting out completely the faults in you. You must not try to justify all your faults. Such a man is the great traitor. Through such a man even the country goes to ruin. Such people are what we see today. So in you, students, future uplifters of Bhārata, heroes who long for the good fortune of the country, you who are tender of heart, these holy feelings must grow today.
Students! A heart that cannot grow Prema for God is no more than a desert. In it there is no chance at all for holy plants to sprout. So plant the seeds of that Prema. Make the flowers of forbearance bloom. Offer the fruits of Śānti to society. You too, lead a life of Śānti. Do not, out of selfishness, set about hurting many people. Do not hurt yourself. Do not hurt others. This alone is the true mark of devotees. Keeping the thought of God in the heart, whatever work you do becomes filled with Prema itself. So remember the Name of God ceaselessly, think on it, fix your gaze on it alone, and make your life fulfilled.
