In plain words
A man who cannot give thanks to such people, with his devotion to God, devotion to God: will this Bhakti ever be real? It never will. It is merely making a stunt even of God. First of all, the mother and father who were within your reach, who were within your call, who loved you, who helped you grow, who brought you this far: love them first of all. That is mātṛdevo bhava, pitṛdevo bhava. We forget the form that is right before our eyes. We worship all the gods that are beyond sight. Tormenting the living, worshipping the lifeless. This can never be Bhakti. Worship the living. Have faith in the divinity in every human being. This is Sāī's teaching. If you truly develop this equality, there is nothing more to the culture of Bhārata than this. We must hate no one.
Vyāsa was a great sage. They said, vyāso nārāyaṇo hariḥ. It is well known that he is the very form of Nārāyaṇa. He changed all the Vedas, which existed in the form of sound, into the form of letters. He is the great-grandson of Arundhatī. Such a sage, seeing that these endless Vedas, the Vedas that existed in many forms, could not be taken in by man, went on dividing them. His birthday is on the full moon of Āṣāḍha. That is the root reason why today is called Vyāsa Pūrṇimā. Vyāsa is the one who saw the divinity in humanity as one in all and spread it to the world. Having written the eighteen Purāṇas, he saw that reading these eighteen Purāṇas would not be possible, and so: paropakārāya puṇyāya, pāpāya parapīḍanaṃ. In these two phrases he summed up their essence. Help ever Hurt never. Help everyone. Do not harm anyone. The one who gave the world all these sacred sayings is Veda Vyāsa. His birthday is the full moon. So this is Guru Pūrṇimā. Since he brought the whole world to awareness, they called him Guru.
Guru means one who roots out darkness. So the true Guru is God alone. He alone has the power and the strength to root out the Ajñāna that is this darkness. As for the rest, those who teach worldly matters may be teachers. None of these is ever a Guru to anyone. Not all who give instruction are Gurus. Guroguruḥ: the one who is Guru to all of them is God. So every person must regard God as the Guru. Saying "This is Guru Pūrṇimā", worshipping gurus, giving fruit and dakṣiṇā: this is not Guru Pūjā. The gurus of today: a mantra in the ear, money in the hand. These are gurus who give pain, gurus who give lectures; the true Guru is God alone. That is why: gurur Brahmā gurur Viṣṇuḥ gurur devo Maheśvaraḥ. They said that God alone is the Guru. Who is that God? For us Nature itself is the form of God, Nature is the best teacher.
