Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Who goes there and gives all its food to the frog born in the rock? Is it not You? This Madhvācārya described God beautifully: He is He. I am I. He is the Master, I am the servent. He is the object, I am the reflection. He is the Sound, I am the Resound. In this way he went on dividing it into two, into dvaita. Within this very dvaita he went on enjoying endless Ānanda, Advaita.

In this world many went on liking that one. Many went on liking this one. Some others went on liking another. These are the religion of Śaṅkara, the religion of Rāmānuja, the religion of Madhvācārya. Some religions went on growing as personal ones. This is the creation of prophets. But what is called the Hindu religion was not created by anyone. Hindu does not mean only what belongs to Bhārata-deśa. It is that which desires the well-being of all. That is why they said: Hiṃ means hiṃsā, violence. Dū means dūra, far. The land that keeps far from violence is the land of the Hindus. From that day to this, it is the Hindu religion alone that has gone on desiring the welfare of all countries and the progress of all living beings. This very religion they went on calling the Sanātana religion. Why did they call it the Sanātana religion? Because there is no person who created it. There is no date of when it came. For the other religions, certain times are all fixed. But the Hindu religion went on yielding to strict restraints. It is because those restraints were there that to this day there is no one in Bhārata-deśa who can shake this Sanātana Dharma or stir it. It is not something that merely grows or wanes. This religion belongs to all countries. This religion is equal and common to all human beings. We must not set up any differences at all, whether of Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, Sikhs or Parsis. Let them have their names if they will, but students at least must give no room to any such difference. You must respect all religions. Whatever is in your religion, that same thing is in the religion opposite. If you follow your religion and respect it, there is no need to criticise one another, is there? Today you call yourself a Hindu, a Hindu. You do not respect your own religion. Today they speak of the religion of Islam. But they do not respect that religion. They speak of the Christian religion. But they do not respect that religion. Truly, personal faiths today keep on changing. Live and behave as a brother man to your fellow man: that is the religion of Islam. But are they conducting themselves that way? No. In the Christian religion they showed forbearance to the point of saying, if someone strikes one cheek, offer the other. But today who is it that ruthlessly plants bombs and burns all the innocent to ashes in a single minute!
