In plain words
A famine may come. Then we should not bring in goods from other countries. We must use what we have stored in this time of famine. Of the remaining half, we must use half for the welfare of the state. Then we must use a quarter for the protection of the country. That is, the military. In this way he laid down that in ruling the state one must see to proper security. In matters of business too he gave a fine ideal. How are today's banks? What they give us is 10%, what they take is 15%. If we put one lakh of rupees in a bank, they give us 10% interest a year. If business people go and take a loan from the bank, they take 15% from them. Cāṇakya said that method was wrong. Lending a hundred rupees to a person: he need not pay interest yearly or monthly. If he gives back two hundred rupees when ten years are up, no interest and no principal. The debt that was given is cleared. Methods like this are kind to the people. With this you must note one small point. If the very person who took these hundred rupees dies within the ten years, his sons need not pay it back. It must end with that. Today, if the man who took a loan dies, they ride roughshod over his house, over his children, over everything. "This is very wrong," he said. He said, "This concerns one person only; what was taken by the person must in no way be connected to the family." Cāṇakya kept putting the Artha-śāstra to proper use.
Today everything is being turned upside down. Management simply means recognising humanness. That is what I spoke of first. Mind of man. You must recognise that just as I suffer when others hurt me, others too suffer in the same way when I hurt them. You must recognise equality. That is the mind of man. When you hold on to "mine" and "I", it comes out as an animal mind. You must regard the principle of the mind that is in all as one. If a manager scolds you, how much it hurts you! The manager must recognise how much the other worker too is hurt if you scold him that way. He must not wield the authority of "I am the manager" there. If he wants to use this authority, he must use it only in the work. He must not use it on the person. This is the mind of man. If you first recognise the one thing in all, everything falls into harmony. That is the Ātma-tattva. If we recognise that Ātma-tattva, then everything becomes one in it.
