In plain words

In your hostel they put a bulb in each room. Each room has its own switch. But for all of them together there is one main switch. If you turn the main switch off, the bulbs will not light even when you turn on the switches in the room. If you turn the main switch on, it does not matter even if you turn the switch in the room off. In the same way the Ātma is the main switch. If we leave that aside and turn on all the other switches, no light will come. So first of all we must understand the Ātma-tattva. It is that alone which is in each one. Different qualities are in different people, but what is equally in all is that. What is the Ātma-tattva? It is this conscience. Without this conscience being satisfied, whatever you do is of no use. Whether you admit your fault or your good or not depends on your conscience. Even if you cover up your fault and argue to others that there is no fault, your conscience will not agree. If your conscience will not agree, it is no use, however many ways you cover it up. The conscience always speaks Satya. It speaks not to others but to you alone. That is what is called the internal talk. That is the internal connection. Outwardly one body may be far from another. But the inner connection, however far away it may be, will not let you go.

A small example of this. You are living in a room in a house. How many rats there are in that room! There are so many ants. They are all in the room itself. But you pay them no heed. You do not love them. In the house next to yours live so many people. You pay no heed to them. Your brother or your son is living in America, very far away. If no letter comes from him for a week, you fret greatly. What is the reason? That is an inner bond. Because it is an inner bond, the tie draws you close however far away the body may be. Only this kind of inner relationship binds you. You pay no heed at all to the outer relationship. That depends on likes and dislikes. If you do not care for them, you hardly notice even whether anyone is living next door or not. But ask where some film actor Manoj Kumar is in Bombay, and you know his whole address. What is the reason? Out of your fondness for him you come to know all those details. You do not get to know the one who lives close by in the house next to yours. But when there is a connection both outward and inward, this grows in both ways.
