Passage 9

In plain words

We must cultivate the land of our heart. In the land of your heart you must raise the crops of good qualities. To have such culture is humanness. If we go on developing such culture, in any business at all, wherever we go, our feeling will stay one. Though you live in society, society does not live in you.

A small example of this. From space all the elements were born. Space is extremely subtle. But heavier than all is the earth. Most subtle is space. Most dense is the earth. And space is in this earth, but the earth is not in space. Sky means sound. There is nothing else there but sound. In the earth there are five: sound, form, touch, taste and smell. So these five elements are in the earth but not in space. Such pure, vast, endless, light space came from the Ātma. That is why the principle of the Ātma is vaster still. It has been said that the Ātma is beyond the guṇas. Many of you children may doubt this. "The Ātma is beyond the guṇas: how can that be?" They just say something idly in words; how can one enquire into these and think them through? Let us take earth as an example. In this earth there are five qualities: sound, touch, form, taste and smell. Because the five qualities have come together, it has become heavy. It lies down below. It is very heavy. Step by step let us go to water. This water has only sound, touch, form and taste. It has no smell. One quality has become minus. Whatever smell you add to that water, that smell comes, but by nature it has no smell. Since one quality is less, water tries to flow from one place to another. It flows from high to low. The third is fire. In it there are only three, sound, touch and form, but no taste and no smell. Two qualities have become minus. Because two qualities are less, fire began to rise higher still. It became light. Air. In air there are only two, sound and touch. It has no form. No taste, no smell. So it stays flowing everywhere, the air. By the time we reach space, there is only sound there. No form, taste, touch or smell. Because four qualities are less, space is vast and light. Since the Ātma is beyond even that, in it there is not even sound. How vast must God be, who has no quality at all! It is everywhere. Wherever you look, it is there. So nothing is in the Ātma. The Ātma is in everything. How? Dig a pit in the clay and look.
