In plain words
Embodiments of Prema!
What must stand first in human society is humanness. However many kinds of learning you master, however high the positions you hold, however much wealth, gold, goods and vehicles you gather, all these are useless if the human quality is lacking. Our first duty is to understand what humanness is. The man of today appears as a man in form, but his conduct and his thinking are empty. A man in form alone is of no use whatever to the world. Conduct and right thinking are essential. A society, and a country too, that has lost this very humanness has to spoil many of its refinements.
Jantūnāṃ narajanma durlabham. Though this sacred human birth has come to us, if we cannot use it in the right way, if we cannot understand it rightly, our very humanness goes to waste. So to live as a human being, to be born as a human being, to behave as a human being: that is our chief duty. For an animal to be born as an animal and to behave as an animal is natural to it. But to be born as a human being and behave as an animal is a path contrary to this. So the chief duty of one born as a human being is to behave as a human being, to experience divinity as a human being, and to be dedicated in Divinity. This alone is the goal. But the man of today does not try to think this far. He does not understand even what man is. He does not enquire what the human qualities are. The reason: he is subject to these physical, worldly, passing, momentary things, and simply goes on criticising the principle of the Ātma, which is divine, sacred and ever new. All these physical joys and pleasures are passing. They are not lasting. To grow the seeds of Prema in human society, to make the flowers of forbearance blossom and to offer the fruits of Śānti to society: that is the chief goal of man. So today peace and security have declined in human society. Life has become such that we cannot even know what Śānti is. So Śānti is not in the world outside. Śānti is in our heart itself. To bring the Śānti that is in this heart into our experience, we must cultivate certain human qualities.
