Passage 2

In plain words

Without the human qualities, humanness turns into something of no value at all.

Embodiments of Prema! What is the bond between society and us? Why should we toil for the sake of society? If we enquire why we should pray for the welfare of society: it is in society itself that we are born, we grow, we live and at last come to our end. Not even for a moment can we live without society. Growing close ties of kinship with the society we spoke of, it is our duty to wish for the welfare of society and the progress of society. We must not dedicate our life merely to selfishness and self-interest, saying I, I. There is a higher level too, beyond selfishness and self-interest. That itself is society. From the individuality called I, we must enter society. From the place called society, we must spread out into what is called the nation. A broad heart, a nature that expands itself, is essential for man. Prema, compassion, forbearance, sympathy and sacrifice: these are the human qualities. Man has two chief limbs. One is the head. The second is the heart. The head is outward, worldly, of Prakṛti. It develops a taste for sense objects. It wants positions. It wants learning. It wants pleasures. It wants riches and wealth. The head goes on desiring all these. All these belong to Prakṛti. All these are like passing clouds. In the same way as they come to us, they come to an end again. In this world we do not find any lasting place, or lasting thing, or lasting object. It is always changing. A child just born we call a baby. Ten years later we call him a boy. At thirty years the same one we call a man. At seventy years the same one we call grandfather. So how much change all these go through! In the course of time, by the influence of place, time and circumstance, humanness goes through ever so many changes. There is no need to hanker after this thing that changes and is put together. That is why the chief duty of the head is precisely to desire this thing of Prakṛti. But the heart is not like that. If the head desires pravṛtti, the heart desires nivṛtti. The principle of this nivṛtti is this: sacred qualities such as Prema, compassion, sacrifice, forbearance and sympathy spring from the heart. Only when they spring from the heart does Prema grow in us. Where Prema grows, there we have no fear. Where we have no fear, there we gain Śānti. That is why faith is essential for us. As important as breath is to man, so necessary is self-confidence to life.
