In plain words
A farmer soaks a bag of paddy, makes it sprout, takes that paddy and scatters it in the mud he has himself ploughed and worked into a thick mire. A fool who knows nothing of tillage, a fool who knows nothing of farming, a fool of great learning, reviles him: “What is this! When people are writhing for want of food, this rough fellow is throwing all this paddy into the mud!” But it is only because he throws one bag of paddy into the mud today that three months later he brings a hundred bags of paddy home. These hundred bags of paddy have come only from that one bag of today. If this paddy were not thrown into the mud, how would a hundred bags reach home tomorrow? In the same way, today we must pour in, as the mantras direct, ghee and other substances too, fragrant substances and precious substances. It is only because we offer them into the fire in this way that endless fruits keep coming to us from it. They see only the offering; what is received they do not know.
Only when we bear something today as a tyāga do we become fit to receive tomorrow what is called bhoga. Only when tyāga is done with the whole heart does the bhoga called perfect yoga come to us. Unfortunately, today this tyāga does not come into any man's mind even in a dream. Even doing tyāga has become a fashion. They do not even understand what tyāga means. That is why, though he has every kind of wealth and every comfort, man is sinking in worries, with no peace or security. He does not do tyāga knowing what it is. He does not give a handful of food to the beggar who comes to the house and so satisfy him. Yet he squanders money in many ways.
Calling it a vow-offering, he ties up money in a bundle; not giving the beggar even a single grain, the miser drops it into Veṅkaṭeśa's hundi.
To the beggar who comes to his house he gives not even a grain. Saying it is for God, the poor miser ties it up and drops it in. He is a miser of misers. Unable to see the God who is in all, the fool torments living beings and tries to feed what has no life. If one has truly recognised the power and might of God, why should He need your money? So you must put all your money to good use for the country. You must help the poor and the helpless. Even in offering this money to God, there is a reason behind it.
