Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So all these are impermanent. Believing such impermanent things to be permanent, and taking the permanent to be impermanent, man falls prey to so many kinds of sorrow.

Embodiments of Prema!

What you keep saying is, is not; what you keep saying is not, is; what is, is God alone, for ever: never forget this good word.

We keep thinking, it is, it is. All that is, is in fact what is not. How long does it stay true for us? What we saw in the waking state we forget in sleep. What appeared in a dream we disregard the moment we wake. What belongs to waking is not in the dream. What belongs to the dream is not in waking. Within a single day two states come to us, each the opposite of the other. To believe in such a passing truth and to forget the eternal Satya is no fitting meaning for humanness. That is why all the Vedas have been teaching this Divinity and asking man to live as man. The Veda, filled with such inner meanings, is not only a mantra; the teachings that go with it lie within it too. The kāṇḍas of karma, upāsana and Jñāna are all the chief royal roads in the Veda. They said that man's chief principle is the naturalness of fellow men and the showing of sympathy. When your fellow men are suffering, you must look at them and hold up the right ideal. You must show co-operation and sympathy. Such feelings are not seen in man today. Only selfishness and self-interest have grown, and today people have forgotten broad feelings altogether. Man must understand the broad principle.

We hear so many good words every day. We see so many good deeds. But does even one of them stay in us? No. A life like this, however much it sees and hears, however long it lasts, is of no use at all. We must gain the strength to digest within us even a little. Humanness is very sacred. It is divine. It is worth living. It is very precious. We must not waste such a precious life. We must not count physical pleasures and joys as what matters most. They are like clouds that drift away. They are like clouds that scatter. It is not right for us to carry on life taking this as our support. But we do have to live in this world. We cannot leave this world.
