Passage 7

In plain words

Man is just such an ungrateful one. So all of us must make a return for what we have received, what we have enjoyed, what we have experienced.

When he sees a green tree or green hills, the devotee: Ah! How great is the beauty of Prakṛti! Saying that all this beauty is the beauty of God, he says, ‘God is nature.’ A scientist comes along. He thinks all its greenness comes from chlorophyll. See how much difference there is between this chlorophyll and the beauty of God. These people go off only into small ideas. That one takes hold of spiritual ideas, high ideas. The man who builds a wall goes higher and higher day by day. The man who digs a well goes lower and lower day by day. Saints are wall builders. Day by day, day after day, they develop high ideas and reach a high level. Dragging everything down to Prakṛti, like a man digging a well, crying ‘observation, research’, ‘observation, research’, they sink only lower. There is no fault in science and technology. Every fault lies in the mind of man itself. We must experience things in the way they are to be experienced. We must think in the way things are to be thought about. To slight everything is the very form of Ahaṅkāra. As Sundarayyar said, as long as there is Ahaṅkāra and show, self-respect will never come within their grasp.

Embodiments of Prema! There is no room at all in us for Ahaṅkāra. In so vast a world, how great are we? With that feeling, we must see that we give Ahaṅkāra no room. We must grow in the sense of sameness: that the Ātma principle in all is one. As the shadows are different, the bodies may be different. Beside this shadow there is sunshine. Without the sunshine there is no shadow. There is the light of the sun in the shadow as well; so for everything, side by side, this Ātma principle: when the difference of upādhis is put away, the two become one. This is what Vedānta called Tat tvam asi. This one has a body; that one has no body. Put away this upādhi that is the body, and the jīva and God are one. There is no body at all.

Embodiments of the divine Ātma! Only when we develop high feelings and the best paths and live as one divine family, close to one another, will the world too enjoy happiness and joy in full measure.
