In plain words
At seventy-five years you called him a grand father. But child, boy, man and grandfather are all one person. Time changes. The body changes. Circumstances change. The individuality is one and the same. That is ekohaṃ bahuśyām. Humanness remains one alone. Ekaṃ sat viprā bahudhā vadanti. Each goes on saying it in a way of his own. In keeping with the sway of place, time and circumstance, they have used that language too. There is water in this tumbler. The Telugu people all called it nīru. The English all say water. The Tamils all say tanni. Those of Sanskrit say vāri. The Hindi speaker says pānī. All these are different names, but the substance is one. That is why we fall into confusion in many ways over these words that belong to the mind. Man's feelings vary in keeping with his saṃskāras.
We must not depend on man's ideas. We must depend on the truth of the thing itself. We must strengthen that faith. Without God there is nothing. A small example. In humanity, in Bhārata alone, there are eighty crores of people. Taking the whole world together, there are 580 crores. Among so many, is it possible to compare one with another? Among so many crores, is there another just like any one of them? So wondrously varied has He made them. One thing more. We have been hearing of many planets from ancient times. Where and when were these planets born? Who created them? From time without beginning until today, without any change at all, they go on following their own order. Today scientists are saying, ‘We too can make all these.’ They can. They are making them. How long do those planets they made go round? Some do not go round even as long as the man lives. Never mind his life time. It does not last even until another planet is made. Man proclaims for himself that he is mighty. If these planets go this way, how much greater must He be who made the planets that have been going round from time without beginning! Surely one can think at least that much! Well, if I make something, I am a great man. They do not reflect even on the subtle thought: how much greater still must be the one who made this?
So we must go on enquiring into each and every thing. There are Blood cells within our body. You use your watch. This watch was made only by one who knew how it should run correctly. Whether some Japanese made it or some Swiss made it, this clock was made only by one who knew all about it. You have not seen them. But you know there is one who made it.
