Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

One has no right at all to bring in what is not within oneself.

If one wants to develop the Ānanda that is within oneself and so enjoy Ānanda oneself, the fitting path for it is the path of Prema alone. For Prema within, Prema outside as well, Prema all around: the Prema within us does not dwindle. A small example. There is a clay jug. If you pour water into this jug and keep it up on a hanging sling where no one will touch it, after two days the water level goes down. This clay soaks it all up, that water. That is why its level goes down. But fill the jug to the brim with water and set this jug in a vessel with water all around it, and this water does not go down by even a drop. Because there is water both all around and in the jug, there is no chance for this water to go down. If there is Prema in you but no atmosphere of Prema all around you, it will go down in you too. We must make all around us full of Prema too. That is why satsaṅg is very necessary. So when there are good feelings in you, you must join only that in which there are good feelings all around you as well. If those who have these feelings do not join you, you must say good bye to them and come back. We need not foster hatred towards them. It is enough to say ‘Namaste.’ In this way we must move away from it. Man today does not make that kind of effort. When they say ‘Hellow’, you should say ‘Hellow’ and keep going. There is no power to enquire whether it is good or bad. The power of discrimination has gone. The way they discriminate today is by justifying whatever we like: the drinker goes to the others, and if you say, ‘You are drinking,’ he describes how great this drinking is. ‘Mental worry goes away through it. In this unconscious state there is a chance to forget this worry.’ So he says, justifying himself. If you try to forget in this way, you become all the weaker. If you think you will forget some sorrows or other, little by little it makes you forget your very self. First that drink enters into you. Then you yourself become drink. What good has come of it? So by joining these bad people you too become a bad man. + +: the two join and become one. It should not be so. We must join what is good. Discrimination lies right there. Is it good or bad, right or wrong: this must come with the heart as witness. That itself is what is called conscious.

Apart from that, you must not change to suit the atmosphere of the world outside. Let anyone think whatever they like; you must seek your own happiness. If you toil for someone else, tomorrow the one who reaps it is you yourself. So society will say something or other. We must stand as an example to society.
