Passage 5

In plain words

You turned it right side: it closed. Same lock, same key. Opening and locking: what is the reason? Turning is the reason for it. Your heart is a lock. Your mind is the key. Turn it God side, and it is detachment. Turn it world side, and it is attachment. So the mind alone is the cause of attachment and detachment. So try to bring your mind under control. In the mind itself is everything.

What is called sin is no separate thing in a foreign land; it clings to the deeds people themselves do. What is called God is no separate one in another country; what is called God is in one's own body itself.

So everything is within us alone. Day after day we sweep, smear the floor, whitewash, plaster, and decorate the house. In the same way we decorate the body. How long does this decoration last? Only as long as the jīva is inside. If that is not there, even if you decorate it, there is no use.

The body is like a cart. The mind is like the horse. If you put the horse in front and the cart behind, the journey goes easily. If you give the horse good feed, it will draw the cart along well. But today we are not giving the horse feed. We are not putting the horse in front. Horse back cart front. That means: how are we doing it? Now we give comfort first of all to the body. We give no comfort at all to the mind. Because of this, all these things have turned topsy-turvy. From the time we get up at daybreak until we lie down at night, we think only of matters that concern the body. Eating, drinking, putting on dress, putting on make-up, going to the office: all of these are only things of the body. To the body we give so many meals: coffee in the morning, lunch at midday, dinner. What food are we giving the mind? How weak it becomes! To a weak mind come weak thoughts. We must make it strong. Good conduct, good thinking, Prema for the Lord of all: we must keep all this as its food. We do not give it this food. Bad company, bad ideas, bad thoughts: all this is entering into the bad. So we are turning bad. That is why: Tell me your company I shall tell you who you are. Whatever kind of people we keep company with, the very turn of mind of such people comes to us. That is why they said satsaṅg is necessary. We must show enough zeal and eagerness to join good company. Why that company? One must bring forth the very Ānanda that is within oneself.
