Passage 5

In plain words

Why set tests at all? Only when tests are set do you go up and reach a higher level. You are now in the 1st year of BA, BCom, BSc. If there were no tests at all for you, you would have to stay in the 1st year all your life. As tests are set, you keep going up from one class to the next …; all these are steps for climbing higher. If you say, 'I want no tests,' there will be no protection at all. A test is protection itself. The test is the very thing that protects …. You must recognise that. You are getting ready only for the examination, but you must be ready also for the sufferings that come with that test. You must be fully prepared to face them.

If you want to attain the higher level, sāyujya, you must face some sufferings. To attain this sāyujya and to face sufferings, the season of Uttarāyaṇa is the best. In this season there is no great hardship. We enjoy this festival of Sankrānti with great joy. What is it like? It brings great excitement to all the little children. On this festival day people call home the newly married sons-in-law and the daughters of the house. They give them new clothes.

Do go to your in-laws' house, O new bridegroom! There is more comfort for you there: your dear sister-in-law will chat sweetly with you; your elder sister-in-law will tease you again and again; all the people of the village will honour you with great fondness; even your father-in-law will wait upon your every step. Go to your in-laws' house, and come back.

… the parents bless.

Little brother, come, there goes the man with the decorated bull! A silver plate and a masalōḍi bangle there are; a gold ring in its nose, the sacred marks on its brow, the decorated bull beside him; with the pointed goad in his hand, he tells his name, playing it in the main street of the village. giving Sītamma to that Śrī Rāma, he holds the wedding; let us watch that festivity, give our gifts and come back: come along, all of you!
