In plain words
Saṃskraṇa, saṃskāra, samājikam: all these too have come from the letter 'sa', from the syllable 'sam'. These words, sanātana, saṃskraṇa, saṃskāra: within the … word 'sam', from what is called 'san', saṃskāra was formed. Culture means moral transformation, customs and usages, traditions, our own good conduct; the … form of all these is itself culture.
Bhāratīya culture is filled with sacredness of many kinds. Take a small example. Bhāratīyas are called HINDUS. These five letters, HINDU, are to Bhāratīyas the five prāṇas. Not only the five prāṇas: the five kośas. Not only the five kośas: the five elements. More than that, five principles. The first is I. I means Individual. That is, what declares individuality. Individuality. N-Nationality. D-Divinity. In each letter there is so much meaning. U means unity. Each letter has a meaning of its own. All these teach the purity within us. Here, from individuality it … and comes to an end in unity. That is, in between these two stands our nationality. That is, what is called jātīyata. Along with this nationality, divinity too is joined. If there were no bond of kinship between these two, this would not be a Hindu land at all. But before all these comes H. You were wondering whether Swami had forgotten. H is very important. H-Humanity. Only when we hold to Humanity does this individuality come forth. Only when we hold to this individuality does a nationality grow up for us, within us. Along with this nationality there is divinity too. The oneness of these four: that is unity. Five letters, five prāṇas, for Bhāratīyas.
Students! First of all, before our own individuality, we must keep in view what belongs to the country. Only when we keep this in view does Individuality come. So consider, taking them one after another, how sacred a meaning they hold. That is why Bhāratīya culture means, first of all, moral conduct. After that, customs and usages; after …, our traditions.
