In plain words

Even the rākṣasas recognised the Rāma-tattva. Śrī Rāmacandra is almighty. The first rākṣasa to recognise that He is all… and all-pervading was Mārīca. It was like this: Viśvāmitra, … the protection of the sacrifice, was taking Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa with him. Mārīca was Tāṭakā's own son. … Tāṭakā was killed, Mārīca came to wreck the yajña. Rāma's arrow left Mārīca some miles …. Through that missile a divine feeling arose in Mārīca's mind. I have seen so many rākṣasas. But nowhere have I seen… so powerful an arrow, so powerful a boy, he thought. That very day he recognised Rāma's tattva. Going from there, to Rāvaṇa, his uncle: …! There is no one in this world mightier than Rāma. There is none to equal Him. There is no way to … His beauty and charm. Puṃsāmohana rūpāya, he said. The form that even men are enchanted by is Śrī Rāmacan…dra's. Such a divine form I saw there,’ he said. Rāvaṇ… kept this in his mind; afterwards his sister Śūrpaṇakhā, after her nose and ears had been cut off, went and poured out her grievance to Rāvaṇa. Rāvaṇa …ed: ‘Sister! What is this strange thing? How great is the power you have! He cut off the ear once and he cut off the nose once. When he cut once, how could you bear to stay like that? he said. Both cannot be cut off at a single stroke…; when he went on cutting … one at a time, how did you keep your patience? What became of your strength and ability… … Then this Śūrpaṇakhā speaks. ‘Annayyamani ceppaḍu. All my gaze was on Rāma's face …; while I was looking at … face, what he cut off and what he did, I did not know at all. Within that lovely, beautiful face… all my senses stood still. But after Rāma had gone, the pain came … to my mind. Not He alone. That Sītā is more beautiful still,’ she said. To work out her hatred, Śūrpaṇakhā fostered this kind of evil feeling in Rāvaṇa…. From then on she firmly taught Rāvaṇa that that Sītā ought to be his, and not stay beside Rāma, who wanders in the fore…st. These evil teachings entered the … Rāvaṇa.

Then Rāvaṇa called Mārīca again. ‘Mārīca, in this task of mine you … as my helper, he said. I need your help very much, he said. You are all-powerful. You are capable of … understanding divinity. You are one who can understand the demonic. You can take on the demonic. You can … divinity. You are one blessed with boons by the gods. You can use every weapon. You … go into the Daṇḍaka forest, and when Rāma is not near Sītā, I must enter there,’ he said. Mārīca told Rāvaṇa. Rāvaṇa, with your time of ruin this perverse thinking is born in you. Who is able to conquer Śrī Rāmacandra … Sītā will never be yours in your life.
