In plain words
As the fire, so the smoke. As the smoke, so the cloud. As the cloud, so the water. As the water, so the rain. As the rain, so the crop. As the crop, so the cooking. As the cooking, so the thoughts that come into us. So it is on account of the food we eat that our thoughts turn good or bad. So rules for food are most necessary for this body. The body is cleansed by water. The cleansing of Manas takes place only through Satya. So only when we eat food that is on the path of Satya do good resolves rise in us. So in this body, held to be the holy temple of God, we must not take intoxicants at all. We must not take food that belongs to the rājasic guṇa.
What are these rules for food? We must decide what is sāttvic. We think that eating some fruit and milk is sāttvic. That alone is not what sāttvic is. We take in fruit and milk merely through one single sense. The body is joined with the five senses. Sound, touch, form, taste, smell. We have a nose. There are ears. There is a mouth. There are eyes, there are hands. The hands, touch. Form, it can see with the eyes. Sound, it can hear with the ears. Smell, it can catch with the nose. In this body, joined thus with the five senses, does it become sāttvic merely by eating fruit and milk through one sense? The food we take reaches all five senses. The eyes must eat the sāttvic food of holy sight. It is not that we may look at whatever we please just because, after all, we have eyes. Through this one may fall into many dangers. So we must use this sight only with a holy feeling. But in the young people of today the sight of Kīcaka is growing. The fitting result of this sight of Kīcaka is nothing but getting one's head smashed. What happened to Kīcaka? Bhīma took up his mace and smashed his head. So the fault of sight must not arise in us at all. This is most necessary for students. Only when you look with a holy feeling, look with the feeling of God, is the food of the eyes truly sāttvic food. Food for the ears is most necessary. We must listen only to holy matters.
