Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Eating in measure brings great ease. Overtalking harms the mind. Talking in measure brings great ease. That is why, in whatever way man is to let the body enjoy, we must follow only the path that is right for that joy.

Man has five kinds of powers of enquiry. This is what they called Vijñāna. One is the knowledge that today has commonly spread all over the world. That is made up of cleverness. This first one is what they called bookish knowledge. This bookish knowledge has turned into superficial knowledge. We are wasting all our time right inside this superficial knowledge. The general knowledge and commonsense that a human being should have at this age is zero. General knowledge and commonsense do not come merely from education. Only through the duties and actions of daily life can we nourish this general knowledge. Through service to society and contact with society there is the chance to nourish this general knowledge. Then the fourth is discrimination knowledge. When we enquire how this discrimination knowledge stands, it is a selfish discrimination. It is a discrimination by which people explain away their own faults to some extent. It is a discrimination that concerns the individual. That is why this discrimination is going down the wrong path. This is not the right discrimination. We need a discrimination that concerns all together. Each one practises a discrimination that justifies himself. Mine is right. Mine is right. This is selfish discrimination. Because of this, there is every chance for the young to take the wrong path. This has to be fundamental discrimination. It must be a discrimination that holds good for everyone, whomever it concerns. 2+2=4. Russians, Chinese, Americans, the people of Pakistan or Indians, everyone has to accept this; there is no escaping it. But here, on the spiritual path, it says '3-1=1'. Nobody accepts this. This is not fundamental; it is individual discrimination. But the spiritual never practises such narrow discrimination.
