Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

They, not knowing the meaning and unable to enquire, may think that this is only an individual's power of enquiry. Whomever we ask, if we say 3-1=1, they will say this is wrong in mathematics. But I argue that it is right. What is the reason? This is not personal. It belongs to the individual being. It concerns the Ātma. It concerns the immortal. It concerns the deathless. No power of enquiry can change it. That is why, precisely because certain kinds of changes have come into this kind of discrimination, people cannot recognise humanness on the proper path. What is the reason? The fifth power of enquiry is most necessary. That is Practical knowledge. Precisely because there is no Practical knowledge, man falls prey to so many kinds of mistaken notions. For every matter Practical knowledge is needed. Today people do not understand what Practical knowledge is. Each person takes what concerns himself to be his own experience. I am one in society. I must enjoy the contentment of the whole of society too. Here we must enquire well. Just as waves rise from the ocean, just as rays spring from the sun, so what has sprung from the one God is Prema. This Prema and God are in no way different. The sun and its rays are in no way different. The ocean and its waves differ in no way at all. They depend on each other. They are inseparably bound. In just the same way we must recognise the truth that this body too is bound up with the divine Ātma principle. In the body dwells the Ātma, God; know this well. Though this body is impermanent and does not last, we must take it as our support right up until we recognise the eternal Satya.

Many people are careless in nourishing this body. That is why the body falls prey to many illnesses. Through these illnesses they cannot reach their divine Ānanda. Dharmārthakāma mokṣāṇāṃ ārogyaṃ mūlamuttamaṃ. If you are to aspire to, and to enjoy, the four puruṣārthas, Dharma, artha, kāma and Mokṣa, health of the body is most necessary. But what path must we follow for this? By right enquiry we must bring about changes in our conduct. Today it is the illness of the mind, more than the illness that comes from food, that is on the increase.
