Passage 13

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Who showed you this way?' Bhīṣma kept asking. Bhīṣma's word does not fail. Because he, Gāṅgeya, was a true embodiment of Satya in vows like this, all his vows are fulfilled. After a while Kṛṣṇa came in. 'Kṛṣṇa! All this is just what You taught. This plan is good indeed,' he warned. This was a joy indeed. He rejoiced that this had become one way to save the Pāṇḍavas. Then his hunger came back to his mind a little. So long as there is worry, we do not feel hunger at all. One who is full of worries will not sit down to a feast. As this sorrow was lifted, he remembered his hunger. 'Kṛṣṇa! What is it that You have under Your arm?' he asked. He put those slippers down. 'These are Draupadī's.' With this, the tears ran fast from Bhīṣma's eyes. Kṛṣṇa! What troubles of every kind You bear to protect Your devotees! This too is one of Your līlās. You do not even ask whether a thing is fit to be done or not. So at a time like this, in what you do, in the mastery of the senses, we must never hold to high and low. Whether in doing good to others or in setting others on the right path, we must be ready to give up anything at all; but even in that tyāga we must follow the orderly way. We must not behave in some wrong or rough way. Only on the orderly path does this culture become our own.

In this way, when students recognise the authorities in the Vedas, Śāstras, Itihāsas and Purāṇas that have been in Bhārata from ancient times, you will surely follow the right path. Students today know nothing of what a Śāstra is, what pārāyaṇa is, what the Rāmāyaṇa is. All the great sages of Bhārata, because they followed such a sacred path, had a dazzling splendour; they were able to keep their honour and esteem as ones who live forever. These students must take shape in the tradition of those great sages. Only then do we become those who have revived the ancient culture of our Bhārata. Along with worldly learning, we must also enjoy the ancient culture in the right way. What I mean is: the essence of spirituality is culture. It is not that culture is one thing and the spiritual another; you must not divide them so.
