Passage 8

In plain words

All these have developed only through science. But we must ask ourselves the question: for whom are all these? We must ask ourselves another question: who is enjoying this? One answer comes: "I". If I am not there, for whom are all these? So if I am there, everything comes. If I am not there, there is not even this. So man is more precious than all things. Born as man, by his own effort he can become Mādhava. But a beast is born a beast and lives only as a beast; it has no way to become Paśupati. It has no sense of the Ātma. Nor has it even the Manas that stands in the way of this Ātma.

I said yesterday. Just as the mass of clouds formed from the sun's heat covers the sun itself, the mass of mental clouds born of the Ātma covers the Ātma itself. So humanness is simply equal to Divinity. So, daivaṃ mānuṣa rūpeṇa. men are more valuable than all the wealth of the world. All the riches, gold, goods, vehicles and the like that we have are not greater than man. If we contemplate and behold for a single moment such an Ātma-principle, which is eternal and Satya, that alone is enough. We become those who have achieved everything. But man is not making the proper effort for it. For the sake of physical comfort and happiness, pleasures and fortunes, he toils in many ways. If out of that toil we give even one part in a thousand, or one part in a crore, to thinking of God, with what Ānanda we can experience that Divinity!

The worry on earth for supporting sons and friends, for trade and talk, the worry that ever arises for wealth, grain, pleasure, fame and gain: that worry, on earth, to behold the lotus feet of Nanda's son; what worry then, Lord, on the journey to the gate of Yama's dread abode?

Of all the time we spend for wealth, grain and fame, all that we misuse on supporting sons and friends and on trade, if we make the effort to place one moment of that time at the lotus feet of God. Even the dread abode's fearful golden doors open of themselves and welcome us, it is said. So if we are to attain Ātma-jñāna and Ātma-ānanda, there is only one support for it.
