Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

In certain things we keep doing certain things in keeping with Prakṛti, the law of nature. This too is not freedom. The law of nature is one; rules and regulations are the other. Human life goes on between these two alone. Beyond that, no one can think on his own, "I am free, I am free."

Divinity alone is freedom. Even that cannot be called freedom. What is, is one alone; that word has no place there at all. A small example. Some people keep saying, "I have surrendered fully to Swami, but my troubles have not lessened, my sorrows have not been taken away." "My hardships have not been taken away." So they think. In My view, this cannot be Śaraṇāgati. If it is truly Śaraṇāgati, "my troubles have not lessened", "my hardships are not over": there is no room for such a question. Still others say, "In dhyāna I attain samādhi to some extent." What is samādhi? In the books that worldly people have written from a worldly view, the principle of samādhi may be described in many ways. One may be in dhyāna and fall into raptures. But we think he is in samādhi. For this, the name samādhi is not a name that fits. It may be only an emotion, or it may be hysteria. Or it may be fits. Or it may be weakness. But it cannot be samādhi. What does samādhi mean? To merge Manas in the Ātma: that is samādhi. In the state of the Ātma, two does not appear here. Sama-dhī: one Buddhi, the same throughout; there are no differences there at all, whether of sorrow and happiness, gain and loss, sin and merit, or Prakṛti and Paramātma. Only in the state of the Ātma does it attain sameness. That is the true svabhāva. So, whatever we hope to gain in human life, in whatever way we follow it in order to gain it, as long as such feelings are there, these are only disorders of the mind. As long as there is Manas, no one has freedom. On the worldly path one may think, "This is my freedom; I am giving my money to him; this is my freedom." This is not freedom. That is not freedom. They are certain natural sāttvic guṇas formed in the feelings of Manas.
