Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Everything is in you. The effort you make is to bring out what is in you. When what is, is one alone, why other sādhanas to gain anything? The sādhana we must do is to drive the sense of avidyā away from the nature of Manas. To check these movements of the mind: that is sādhana. Everything is in you. That is the very thing Kṛṣṇa taught Arjuna. Arjuna! When you were born, you did not know archery. None of you, when you were born, came having learned all these skills. You think that little by little you have learned some great skills. These are not things you learned. They are what was in you, and you brought them out. Arjuna! You think Droṇācārya taught you archery. Droṇācārya did not teach you any skills. He only brought out what was in you. What is not in you, no guru, whoever he may be, and no one with mighty power, whoever he may be, can bring in what is not there. Good fortune or misfortune, joy or sorrow: all these are within us. Now we have dug a well. When the well was dug a hundred feet, water came. Did you bring that water? The water was there all along. Because the earth between it and you was removed, the water appeared. You did not create that water anew. In the same way, Arjuna, you have forgotten the divine power that is in you. What is the reason you forgot? Only because you became identified with the body. You have forgotten, and so everything, divinity, purity, impurity, sorrow, joy, is within us. If I think this is freedom, for you it is not freedom. It is the very thing that is. If you think this is freedom, it is not freedom. It is doership. So there is no meaning at all in calling it free will. Free will is one alone. That is the level of the heart. It is there for ever. It is not something that comes once and goes once. As long as the feelings of Manas are there, man's feelings upon feelings keep growing. So these are only the freedoms of Manas, not the freedoms of man. Sampath said: that a student, sitting in some way or other, has the freedom to put a question and get an answer. This cannot be called freedom. He tried to learn something he did not know. In the way he tries, and in the manner he asks, he must change somewhat.
