Passage 5

In plain words

We must certainly acquire learning. But this wealth and this learning we must put to use in return. We must set it on the right path. This kind of feeling is not arising in students. We must bring the learning we have gained into society, and through it give the people in society true joy and well-being. Wealth too we must put to good use in society, in the right way. Unless it is used well in society like that, it is no better than dirt. To the very society from which we have earned, we must offer it back. That is true service. So, in students the spirit of tyāga is to be seen nowhere. Heaping up for themselves, heaping up for themselves. But in their lives they are treating it as one way traffic. What we take, we must use in return. We must give it back. Only then can we rise further, to a high level in human life. Many students do not know how to swim. When we keep pushing the water back, our body moves on forward. If we do not push the water itself back, our body does not move forward. We must keep pushing back. Past is Past. By going on doing this kind of thing, we can take life as high as we will. The tyāga we must make today is not of money alone. We must make tyāga of our bad qualities too. What is tyāga? To give up our bad qualities: that is tyāga.

To cast the wicked feeling out of one's feelings is tyāga; that alone becomes yoga; it is not leaving wealth and wife to go off to the forest.

To leave wife and children is no such great tyāga. To give up wealth and grain is no great tyāga. If the mind is set on it, we can give all these up easily; but to give up the bad qualities in us is true tyāga. Only then does our humanness change into a perfect humanness.

Students! For man to try to live at least as a man is a great thing. To live out humanness as animality is no great thing.
