Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Practise any one path of these nine kinds. God does not look at all at your money, goods and vehicles, or at your goods and possessions. Nor does He inquire into your caste and lineage. To those who take refuge in Him with Prema from the heart, He is near, He is their treasure

Of whose line was Vālmīki? In which village was Nanda born? How much wealth had Kucela on earth? What learning had the elephant king? How old in years was Dhruva on this earth? How much strength had Śabarī? How much generosity of mind had Vidura? How much cleverness had Timma?

'Of whose line was Vālmīki?' If God bestows His grace looking at a low birth, of whose line was Vālmīki? He belonged only to the hunter caste. 'In what village was Nanda born?' This Nanda was looked on in the world as one from a lowly village. God does not look at that. 'How much wealth had Kucela on earth?' What wealth would Kucela have? Not even beaten rice in his hand. To such a man God gave every good fortune. Looking at what did He give it? Looking at that Prema. 'What learning had the elephant king?' How old in years was Dhruva on this earth? He is an elder, he is a sannyāsī, he is a scholar; I am an ordinary man, I am a little boy: you need not think like this. God does not look at age. How old was Dhruva? Five years of age. How old was Prahlāda? Five years of age. It is because they were fortunate that they could have divine experiences at that age. 'How much strength had Śabarī?' That Śabarī had no strength at all, poor soul. Śabarī was one who lived on roots and tubers, sat behind a tree and listened with a one-pointed mind to all that the ṛṣis taught. Whatever karmas she performed, she went on performing them for the pleasure of God. The great sage Mataṅga said: 'Mother! Śrīman Nārāyaṇa was born as the son of King Daśaratha, and Śrī Rāmacandra has entered the forest to carry out his father's word,' he said.
