In plain words
Only when we do good deeds does purity of the citta come to us. Only when there is purity of the citta is the fullness of Jñāna attained. All these are within us. We do not have to go out and search somewhere. We do not have to read any books. If one searches within oneself, one will find it at any time. Here there is a wall clock. In this wall clock there are three hands. One is the minute hand, the second is the second hand, another is the hour hand. These are the second, minute and hour hands. If we observe this well and study it, how clearly we will understand them! When the second hand goes tick, tick, through sixty houses, the minute hand reaches only one house. You see: when the minute hand has passed through sixty houses, the hour hand reaches only one house. Our body is like a wall clock. We are doing some karma. We keep on working without a pause. This is the second hand. From the moment we rise at dawn till we lie down at night we go on doing good karmas. When we have done many good karmas, the minute hand, that is, purity of the citta, comes up to one level. Here, upāsana: when, in that purity of the citta, we love God in many ways, worship Him, sing His praise and remember Him, the hours hand, which is the Ātma, comes up to one level. Now, the second hand moving is clearly seen by us. You can count well how many good deeds you have done. The minute hand too: 'I am offering prayer to God in so many ways, I am doing upāsana in so many ways'; that too is seen, the hand turning a little. But the hours hand moving is not seen. Yet the minute hand and the second hand are needed for the sake of that unseen hours hand; if this hours hand is not there, the minute hand and the second hand are of no use. Nothing can be said. So if we do these good deeds and think these good thoughts and have no faith in ourselves, it all comes to nothing.
So, students! When you find the time,
hearing, singing, remembering Viṣṇu, serving His feet, worship, salutation, service, friendship, and the offering of the self.
